In a significant step toward modernising its financial area, Albania is poised to welcome its first fully digital bank after the Bank of Albania’s Supervisory Council granted preliminary approval for the licensing of JET Bank.
This decision, approved on December 3, 2025, marks one of the most important developments in the country’s banking sector in recent years.
A New Model for Banking in Albania
Unlike traditional banks with physical branches and legacy infrastructure, JET Bank is designed from the ground up as a 100% digital institution.
It plans to leverage advanced financial technology to deliver banking services through digital platforms, with an emphasis on simplicity, security, accessibility, and a seamless customer experience.
While the specifics of JET Bank’s offerings have not yet been fully disclosed, digital banks generally provide services such as instant account opening, mobile payments, online credit applications, and real-time financial insights — all accessible without the need for branch visits.
Strengthening Albania’s Financial Sector
The move to license a digital-only bank comes at a time when Albania’s banking system is experiencing gradual evolution and diversification. After a period of consolidation that saw several mergers and exits, the market is now showing signs of expansion and innovation.
JET Bank becomes the second new entrant to receive preliminary approval in recent months, alongside a foreign institution also entering the Albanian market.
What’s Next for JET Bank
With preliminary approval in hand, JET Bank has up to 12 months to fulfil all conditions necessary for full licensure.
During this period, the bank must demonstrate operational readiness, sound risk management practices, cybersecurity defenses, and full regulatory compliance — essentials for protecting customers and ensuring stability in the financial system.
